Nokia Lumia 1020: focus on camera misses the big picture

There's no doubt about it: photographs taken with Nokia's new Lumia 1020 device are enormously impressive if you print them out onto a large-format high-quality print measuring, say, 1.3m wide by a metre deep. Here at Pier 42, where the launch took place earlier on Thursday, there are a number of prints showing photos taken in the past few days here in New York.

One of the most striking (not online yet, but coming at Nokia's press site) shows a view towards the apartments overlooking Central Park. The lines of the apartments are razor-sharp; the grass in Central Park is vigorously green; the pools of water are pellucid blue. Viewing it online doesn't really do the 41-megapixel shot justice.

Along with the other dozen shots hanging in a sort of gallery, you need to see it published professionally to comprehend it. And that's before you learn that it was taken from a helicopter. "That's a challenge for most smartphones," said one of Nokia's engineers, who has worked on the device for quite some time. "But we've got optical image stabilisation…" He wasn't too fazed at the specifications leaking out ahead of the official announcement. "41 megapixels is just a number," he said. "That doesn't tell you what it's like to look at."

Yet here's a strange thing: if Nokia were to release the 1020 as a stand-alone camera, stripping out the mobile phone element, it would certainly bomb. The compact camera market "is in free fall", to quote the writer from Amateur Photographer (who is also out here as a guest of Nokia). People have given up buying compact cameras because they're digital, just like their smartphones, and take nice pictures, just like their smartphones, but they don't have the capability to send their pictures to social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine or Snapchat. And the cameras on smartphones are generally "good enough" - just as MP3-quality sound has generally been found to be "good enough" by the vast majority of buyers.

By making the Lumia 1020 a superlative camera that has a phone attached, Nokia seems to be going after a very specific segment of the market: "prosumers" who want to take really good photos and have the connectivity that a smartphone provides. It's not, however, going to attract the sort of people who want to take a picture and upload it to the main social networks.
Price of success

For one thing, there's the price. The Lumia 1020 will cost $299 upfront for the basic 32GB model plus the cost of a contract from AT&T in the US; for comparison, the AT&T iPhone 5 is $199 for the base 16GB model before the contract. (Update: the 32GB iPhone costs $399, so the price is the same if you equalise those specifications. However there isn't a 16GB Lumia 1020, which means price-conscious buyers might stop at the 16GB iPhone.) For another, there's the fact that it's Windows Phone - which still doesn't have native apps for Vine, Instagram or Snapchat. Chief executive Stephen Elop points out that there are third-party apps which will do the posting to Instagram (via Hipstamatic, a company which went through its own near-death experience last August when it laid off all but one of its staff). You can post to Instagram via Hipstamatic, and then read Instagram via an app called Instance. And there's a Snapchat-compatible app.

Yet none of this is like having the native apps. And the question of whether ordinary people will really pay top whack for a fantastic camera is already answered by the compact camera market; and of whether they'll pay top whack for a top-end smartphone seems increasingly to be "no" as sales forecasts for the Samsung Galaxy S4 are revised down, along with those for the iPhone.

So what is the purpose of the Lumia 1020? I think it's to show off a top-end capability that Nokia can then push down to its lower-end phones - rather as Samsung does with the Galaxy S range, where the top-end phone is the flag carrier for the cheaper range that follows it.

People who appreciate high-quality photography (in terms of pixels captured) tend to assume that everyone will want just the same, if only they're shown the chance to get it. But this is rather like the argument that hi-fi manufacturers fooled themselves with a decade or so ago, thinking that by offering "24-bit" audio quality on Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio they would tempt people away from lo-fi MP3 listening.
Sound argument

The reality is that most people listen to music in very low quality from car radios, small bookshelf speakers, lousy headphones. MP3s weren't, and aren't, much worse - sometimes, better - than what they used to get. And you have to have ridiculously good hearing to distinguish the difference in 24-bit sound (and even that might be imaginary). SACD and DVD-Audio died like dogs in a ditch.

Now, we're much better at distinguishing differences in quality in photos, particularly when they're printed out; but viewed on a 5in smartphone screen or even a standard laptop screen, the lack of quality in most of the photos we take isn't visible. Nokia's best hope may be that screen technology improves so rapidly that the difference in picture quality becomes more visible. For the meantime, though, it will be the cheaper Lumias - the 520 and 610 particularly - which will be the bedrock of its sales. (In fact, as I wrote this article, Kantar WorldPanel ComTech tweeted that the Lumia 520 had helped Nokia to reach its highest smartphone share in the UK since April 2011 - back in the days when Nokia still sold Symbian. It didn't however specify how high that is.)

Even then, what Stephen Elop really needs more than Lumias with fantastic cameras is for Vine, Snapchat and Instagram to write native apps for the Windows Phone platform. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be in his hands

Nokia Lumia 1020 specifications, press shots leaked ahead of launch

Nokia may be busy gearing up for the launch of its next-flagship camera smartphone, the Lumia 1020, but full specifications of the device have been revealed ahead of launch.

Unleash the Phones revealed the specifications of the 41-megapixel Windows Phone called Nokia Lumia 1020 hours ahead of its official launch. While The Verge has posted a number of press shots of the Nokia Lumia 1020.

As per the revealed spec sheet, the Nokia Lumia 1020 will come with a 4.5 inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 768x1280 pixels and 2.5D sculpted glass Gorilla Glass 3. Nokia has also added features like PureMotion HD+, Super sensitive touch that works even if you are wearing gloves and ClearBlack technology to the display.

The device is said to be powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor; however there is no word about which Snapdragon processor. The highlight of the device is the PureView 41-megapixel sensor which offers Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), backside-illuminated image sensor, 6 lens optics accompanied by a Xenon Flash. Nokia has also complemented the camera with its software like Nokia Pro Camera and Smart Camera Mode, while there is a 1.2-megapixel front camera as well. There is 32GB internal storage on the device, 2GB RAM and will also come with 7GB SkyDrive cloud storage.

As per the specification revealed, the dimensions of the device stand at 130.4x71.4x10.4mm and the weight is 158 grams.

Other major features include USB 2.0, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC with SIM based security, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, A-GPS and Glonass. There is said to be a 2,000mAh battery that Nokia claims would deliver a standby time of 16 days and a talk time of 13.3 hours. The handset would be available in three colours Yellow, White and Black. On software front, the Nokia Lumia 1020 would come preloaded with the suite of Nokia apps like Nokia Music, Maps, HERE Maps, Nokia City Lens etc.

The leaked spec sheet seems to be missing external storage and wireless charging, which seems to suggest that the phone will lack these features

Paytm app launched for Windows Phone and Nokia Asha touch phones

Paytm, one of India's leading prepaid recharge and payment solutions for mobile, DTH, 3G data and utility services, has launched its app on Windows Phone and Nokia Asha touch platforms.

The Windows Phone app has a similar interface to its iOS counterpart. The home panel has mobile, DTH, toll card and data card recharge options. Other features available on Paytm's website and mobile apps like coupons are present in the newly launched app as well.

Paytm aims to get a bigger share of the recharge and bill payments market with the roll out of its new apps. The company claims to have over 6 million subscribers that use its services over Web, SMS, IVR, mobile Web and mobile apps.

Commenting on the launch Harinder Takhar, CEO, Paytm, said "At Paytm we have always strived to create a smooth experience for our users irrespective of their choice of device and this initiative is yet another effort to extend the world-class experience Paytm is known for to Nokia Asha and Windows Phone devices."

Joe Devassy, Regional Head, Developer Experience for India Middle East Africa, Nokia said "Mobile wallet apps have gained immense popularity amongst the smartphone and feature phone users in India. This is primarily because consumers are looking for convenient ways to buy tickets and pay their bills. We are very excited to partner with Paytm as through this partnership we are offering our Asha and Lumia consumers an ideal platform to recharge their phones and make payments while on the go. We look forward to Paytm support to provide great utility, accessibility and seamless experience to our consumers across price segments."

Nokia Music with Mix Radio comes to Asha phones

Nokia Music for India has just got Mix Radio and guess which Asha phones will be coming pre-loaded with it? The 305, 310, 311 and 308 members in the Asha series which are currently shipping in the country, will arrive with the service out of the box. The facility is free to use, though data charges may apply depending on the plan the concerned handset is paired with.

For those who don’t know, Nokia Music is an app which lets people organize their tracks and buy songs from the online store. After a free trial period that follows when the application is downloaded, users can listen to just 30 seconds of an audio snippet of music they haven’t bought. A Gig Finder feature has also been incorporated into the tool, meaning discovering concerts, buying tickets and even finding the venue on Here Maps are part of the package.

Previously, those who had an Asha phone with the aforementioned app, also enjoyed access to over 8 million tracks through the Finnish company’s online store hawking them. The introduction of Mix Radio means that users can now look forward to more than 15 million songs which will be part of mixes carefully curated by big names in the industry. The number of such playlists available with the service crosses 150. Out of these, up to 4 mixes can be downloaded and listened to when offline.

The convalescing mobile company has been paying attention to every segment of the market in an effort to give players like Apple and Samsung a run for their money. It makes sense for it to concentrate even on the lower end department since a consumer base that matures with a brand may have loyalty to offer in exchange for the attention. And the Asha handsets seem to be selling quite well in the low- to mid-range group.

Nokia has not only been wooing Asha users with Mix Radio of late. In the past, we have also seen the 501 getting Here Maps Beta. And before that, the company brought the Mail for Exchange app to a few devices in the lineup. Windows Phone hand-me-downs or not, some good will is surely flying in the direction of the brand.

Nokia Asha phones getting WhatsApp, Mail for Exchange support with new update

Nokia is rolling out a new software update for its Asha touchscreen phones bringing new functionality and improvements.

The software update, available for Nokia Asha 305, Nokia Asha 306, dual-SIM variants of Nokia Asha 308 and Nokia Asha 310, adds several new features including enhanced support for Mail for Exchange. It also adds support for popular mobile instant messenger WhatsApp, and improved social apps, in addition to a new dedicated launcher for YouTube.

The update can be downloaded over the air through the Device updates menu in the Phone settings or by connecting the phone to a computer via the Nokia Suite desktop software.
Nokia had announced last week that the Mail for Exchange app was now available on Nokia Store for Nokia Asha users.

The app, which was initially announced in May, is compatible with the Nokia Asha 311, Nokia Asha 310, Nokia Asha 309 and Nokia Asha 308, will allow users to sync their email, calendar and contacts data with Microsoft Exchange 2003, 2007, 2010 Servers and Microsoft Office 365 Mobility Online Service through Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync protocol. Perhaps the update facilitates the installation of the app in the above mentioned Asha series phones.

With support for WhatsApp, Nokia wants to make its Asha phones a strong contender in the low-cost phones segment, with budget Android smartphones eating into its share. While one can install and use messaging apps much more easily on Android smartphones which come with a dedicated app store,Google Play Store, and support for running apps in the background, not all Nokia Asha feature phones support it out of the box due to their software limitations. It's worth mentioning that a large number of users are increasingly using data based messaging apps over conventional text messaging so if Nokia doesn't add these 'smart' features it's likely that it will see its users abandoning the platform.

This also consolidates Nokia's efforts to position the Asha series as a smart feature phone or indeed a smartphone.

Meanwhile, Nokia had also introduced two more apps that will encourage corporate users to adopt Nokia Asha phones in addition to offering Mail for Exchange support. Editori Text and Editori sheet apps allow users to view and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents on the move. With the apps users can now modify, save and share documents or spreadsheets for quick review right from their Nokia Asha phones.
