BBM coming to Android and Apple users today, gradual global roll out underway

Instant messaging service, BBM will finally be up for download on the Android and iPhone markets today. It will be available for free on Google Play Store and Apple Store.

BBM will be available for Android smart phones running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean beginning at 4.30pm on September 21. BBM for iPhones running iOS 6 and iOS 7 will become available for each market on the App Store schedule of 12:01am local time on September 22.

A lot of fake apps are currently on Google Play Store fooling thousands of consumers. One such app was called ‘Blackberry Messenger BBM" and was downloaded by over 100,000 users until it was removed from the store. However, the official BBM app is only available in New Zealand for iPhone customers. Global roll out is underway. The official Android version will show up here when it is released.

Initially, when Blackberry made the announcement of making BBM available to all, a lot of users and non-users reacted to the big move with mixed opinions.

BBM has more than 60 million monthly active customers on BlackBerry alone and this figure is expected to multiply with the popular messaging app becoming available on the two most popular mobile platforms.

Sunil Lalvani, the company’s India managing director, spoke on how BBM will be more secure than any other instant messenger tools and how this will help the company on its way forward.

Hackers offered cash, booze to crack iPhone fingerprint security

BOSTON: Hackers are gearing up for iPhone 5S release with a contest to crack the device's first-ever fingerprint scanner, a high-tech feature that Apple Inc says makes users' data more secure.

A micro venture capital firm joined a group of security researchers to offer more than $13,000 in cash along with bottles of booze, Bitcoin currency, books and other goodies to the first hacker who breaks the device in a contest promoted on the website.

Arturas Rosenbacher, founding partner of Chicago's IO Capital, which donated $10,000 to the hacking competition, said that the effort will bring together some of the hacking community's smartest minds to help Apple identify bugs that it may have missed.

"This is to fix a problem before it becomes a problem," he said. "This will make things safer."

Meanwhile, Forbes.com reported that a 36-year-old soldier living in Spain's Canary Islands, Jose Rodriguez, has already uncovered a security vulnerability affecting iOS 7, which Apple began distributing to existing iPhone and iPad customers on Wednesday.

The publication said that it is possible to bypass the lock screen of those devices in seconds to access photos, email, Twitter and other applications. It included a video demonstration on its website and advice on how users could thwart the bypass technique:

Among those gearing up for the fingerprint reader hacking contest is David Kennedy, a former US Marine's cyberintelligence analyst who did two tours in Iraq and now runs his own consulting firm, TrustedSec LLC.

"I am just waiting to get my hands on it to figure out how to get around it first," the founder of the DerbyCon hacking conference told the Thomson Reuters Global Markets Forum this week. "I'll be up all night trying."

Why worry?
Security experts worry about the implications of using the module to grant access to sensitive data on the phone and potentially enabling mobile purchases.

The fingerprint scanner on the top-of-the-line iPhone lets users unlock their devices or make purchases on iTunes by simply pressing their finger on the home button. It has been hailed as a major step in popularizing the use of biometrics in personal electronics.

Security engineer Charlie Miller, known in hacking circles for uncovering major bugs in the iPhone as well as circumventing security in Apple's App Store, said it could take fewer than two weeks for Kennedy or some other smart hacker to get around the new lock.

Once they're in, they could gain access to the cornucopia of data typically stored on a user's iPhone and might potentially be able to buy goods from iTunes and Apple's App store.

Apple declined to comment for this article.

To be sure, experts say they know of nothing intrinsically wrong with Apple's fingerprint reader, based on what the company has so far disclosed. Reviewers this week gushed over its ease of use and reliability.

The reader's sapphire crystal sensor is embedded in the phone's home button and reviews the fingerprint as a user touches it to verify his or her identity.

Data used for verification is encrypted and stored in a secure enclave of the phone's A7 processor chip. No information is sent to any remote servers, including Apple's iCloud system.

HD Moore, a well-known hacking expert and chief researcher with the security software maker Rapid7, said such protections mean "the bar is a little bit higher," but that certainly won't discourage hackers from trying to break the new technology.

"This is definitely something to target and something people will want to go after," he said.

Nothing personal
Apple shouldn't take hackers' enthusiasm personally.

All major electronics products are subjected to similar scrutiny as new features are rolled out, including devices from Google, Microsoft and Samsung Electronics.

For example, in 2012, Charlie Miller led a team that demonstrated techniques for taking over smartphones running Google's Android software through their use of near-field communications, or NFC, a wireless technology used for sharing data or making purchases at point-of-sales terminals.

Bugs are often disclosed by "white hats," hackers who unearth flaws and report them so manufacturers can repair them, preventing criminal exploitation. The hope is the good guys find them before "black hats" uncover them for nefarious purposes.

White hats have found multiple security issues with iPhones, iPads and in the App store since Apple launched its first smartphone in 2007. They say that scrutiny has helped make it one of the most secure devices on the market today.

Apple executives said at last week's iPhone launch that the new fingerprint reader, dubbed Touch ID, will help make phones far more secure by dint of its ease of use.

About half of all smartphone users don't bother to use current screen-locking technology because of the inconvenience of keying in multiple-digit passwords. Apple is betting users may be far more willing to avail themselves of a solution that requires a single finger-swipe.

"The technology within Touch ID is some of the most advanced hardware and software we put in any device," Dan Riccio, senior vice president of hardware engineering, said at the event.

Kennedy said he needs to examine the new iPhone to figure out how to best attempt an attack.

He said his choices include hacking the software that analyzes the fingerprint data, or physically opening up the phone and connecting it to a custom-built device that would impersonate Apple's fingerprint reader.

He added that it might be possible to lift a user's fingerprint from elsewhere on the device and somehow make a clone of it.

Rich Mogul, an analyst with the security research firm Securosis, said he planned to use it and expects it to be widely adopted despite the fact that hackers are circling.

"Nobody has gotten their hands on it to see what the weaknesses are and how easy it is to crack," Mogul said.

"We'll have to wait to see."

BlackBerry confirms BBM on Android and iOS

BlackBerry confirmed on Wednesday that its messenger service would come to Android and iOS this weekend.

A report had BBM coming to Android on Friday and iOS on Saturday. It turns out, it was a day off. The Android version will come on Saturday, while the iOS version hits the App Store on Sunday.

BBM was previously exclusive to BlackBerry users, and is much loved by the BlackBerry faithful. But by expanding it across platforms, BlackBerry is looking to take over the likes of WhatsApp, which has garnered more than 300 million users.

BlackBerry has attempted to rebrand BBM as more than a messaging service, positioning it as more of a social network.

It's been a busy day for BlackBerry, which introduced the BlackBerry Z30 smartphone earlier on Wednesday. The Wall Street Journal reported that it may cut up to 40 percent of its workforce by the end of the year

Grand Theft Auto: fan stabbed and robbed of new game

A Grand Theft Auto fan was hit with a brick, stabbed and robbed of the new computer game moments after queuing to buy it.
Grand Theft Auto 5

The 23-year-old was attacked as he made his way home from a supermarket in the early hours of this morning.

He had been to the Asda superstore in Colindale, North West London, which had opened late for the worldwide release of the fifth version of the notoriously violent game at midnight.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We were called at 1.20am to Princes Avenue, Colindale. A 23-year-old man was shopping, then on his way back home he was hit with a brick and stabbed.

"He was robbed of items he had bought from a nearby Asda supermarket, including a copy of Grand Theft Auto."

Police believe the attack was carried out by multiple suspects but said it remained unclear how many were responsible.
The victim was taken to a north London hospital, where he was in a stable condition this morning.

Detectives have asked witnesses to contact Crimestoppers with any information on the attack.

Twitter users meanwhile expressed their shock at the violent mugging, with one writing, "It's just a game".

The release of Grand Theft Auto V was expected to break sales records after hitting the shelves today.

Amazon, the online retailer, has already sold out of the game, which reportedly cost around £170 million to make and market.

Experts estimate it could generate £1 billion during its first year on sale when gamers are predicted to buy some 25 million copies.

Kevin McFeely, from the GAME store, said the company opened as many branches as it could last night.

GTA V has received rave reviews from critics across the board, who have labelled it "one of the very best video games ever made".

I wish I had done more films: Shahid Kapoor

After completing a decade in Bollywood, actor Shahid Kapoor is happy with the way his career has shaped, but regrets not doing enough films in the past ten years.

The 32-year-old actor made his acting debut in 2003 with college drama "Ishq Vishk" and has so far starred in just 20 films.

Shahid feels he should have presented himself more often on the big screen to the audience, which in turn would have catapulted him to greater success.

"The one mistake that I made was I did very little work. I think that is not good. As an actor you need to go out there, show yourself to the audience twice or thrice a year, at least at this stage of my career.

"I am not 45. I am not at that stage where people have seen twenty years of my work. So I feel it is important to keep presenting yourself to the audience. There will be times they will like you, there will be times they will not like the film. I have learnt over ten years that films will come and go, but people must like you. And therefore your performances must be consistent," Shahid told PTI in an interview.

Shahid's career so far has been defined by a collection of soaring highs and dispiriting lows. He tasted success with his debut movie but could not follow it up with his next films until "Vivah" in 2006.

His other successful outings have been Imtiaz Ali's "Jab We Met" in 2007 and Vishal Bhardwaj's 2009 film "Kaminey", which is arguably Shahid's best performance till date.

"I have seen some very successful periods and some very unsuccessful periods. But I think it is most important to recognise that you need to work with the right people. You have to keep working without changing who you are and how you are," Shahid said.

The actor, who is the son of Bollywood veteran Pankaj Kapur, says because of the uncertainty in his profession, it gets difficult to take the right decision at times.

"As it is such an unpredictable field that it is all about timing. You always take decisions which can go either way. You can never know that a film will surely do well. So sometimes when the time is good the decisions turn out to be great. But when you are going through a bad phase, it goes against you," Shahid said.

Critics' review: Respect women? Don't watch Grand Masti

Indra Kumar's Grand Masti, a film that portrays women as nothing but absolute objects that need to be exploited to their utmost 'potential', releases on the very day that the decision for the heinious rape and murder of a young woman is declared. Coincidence or not, critics are thoroughly
disgusted.

"This film establishes male chauvinistic notions that men are horny beasts and women are nothing more than available creatures to provide pleasure. It’s so unbearable and disturbing to watch such films that demean women so brutally!" exclaims Mohar Basu in koimoi.com.

"Grand Masti is a grand tapestry of trash! If you are going to watch the film, it is automatically assumed that you are brainless to invest your time in such a painful film. I would rather route you to watch blue films which might have a better storyline and more action than you expect here. Since films are a work of effort, I am not giving this a zero! Here’s 0.5/5 for Grand Masti," Basu adds.

Abhishek Mande gives the film zero stars. "I am going with zero out of five stars for Grand Masti because there is no way you can enjoy this movie and still claim you respect women," he writes for Rediff.com.

Is his disgust well in place?

"Grand Masti features little else besides heaving bosoms, tight shots of women in hotpants (or less) and sexual innuendoes that make crass seem too sophisticated a word to describe them," Mande explains.

"But the real tragedy would be if this film works at box office because that won't just set off a trend of similar movies but, more importantly, reveal something rather dark about our own hearts and minds," he remarks.

Should a film like this be screened on such a fateful day? Or is it best that we face the reality that surrounds us?

"I feel something throbbing between my ears. Clearly, the brain is not at home. Come on, there’s got to be something funny enough to report," writes a very pained Mayank Shekhar in thew14.com.

"Okay, these porn-stars from the principal’s family have amusing names, if you may. They are called Rose, Mary and Marlowe. The screenwriters love this poor joke as they do everything else they’ve written so far, because they keep repeating them anyway. So we hear: Mary, Rose, Marlowe; Marlowe Mary Rose…"

"I don’t know about roz (daily). But you hope nobody’s brains get maro-ed (bajao-ed, screwed) this badly too soon," adds Shekhar.

But the larger question remains, is the audience entertained?

No, says Mayank Shekhar. "At least half my row in the theatre had already left at the interval though. One is often advised to leave your brains behind for a film like this. It is the only way to ensure your IQ doesn’t drop to negative when you’re finally done with the movie."

About time?

"I would happily enjoy an adult comedy if it was funny but I doubt that the makers of this film know the difference between funny and cheap," writes Rohit Khilnani in India Today, pointing out the basic flaw in the film.

"The problem here is that the humour is cheap and forced. The makers have not just gone too far but they have scrapped the bottom of the barrel to dig out the cheapest possible double meaning jokes. Throughout the film, the close up of private parts, male and female both, leaves you disgusted," he adds.

Khilnani didn't enjoy it, at least not in the theatre.

"When a film makes you uncomfortable and gives you that awkward feeling which only a porn film can give, if you end up watching one in a crowd, then of course it's not entertaining."

How Narendra Modi positioned himself for the top post in BJP over time

Three years ago, Narendra Modi overshadowed all BJP leaders at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan a day after Nitish Kumar called off a dinner for the BJP’s national executive in a huff after ads praising Modi appeared in Bihar newspapers. The crowd in Modi masks cheered him on as he spoke, dwarfing other top leaders.

While there is no denying Modi’s immense popularity among BJP workers, he harnessed it well through public appearances, smart PR work and a wide social media presence. The RSS and sections of the BJP backing him also cited this popularity, thus making it acquire a self-perpetuating circularity.

Earlier this year, the same scene was repeated in Bangalore in the run-up to the Karnataka polls, with local MP Ananth Kumar literally being booed as the crowd awaited Modi. In a repeat act days back, the crowd again chanted Modi’s name at Jaipur.

Once the RSS thought he was the best bet for the BJP to return to power, increasing sections of the BJP leaned towards him to be in the good books of the RSS and the party cadre.

“I want you to stand up and welcome the most popular leader,” party chief Rajnath Singh dramatically told the BJP national council in Delhi early in 2013. He was making up to Modi, accurately reading that the Sangh and workers were veering towards him.

Himself aware that his time had indeed come, Modi tactically positioned himself for the top post over the following months. He took to speaking in Hindi even in Gujarat to reach out to a wider audience.

He leveraged his three-term stint in Gujarat to suggest that he was best suited to pull India out of the spiral of corruption and “policy paralysis”. Perception of a leadership vacuum and massive corruption charges against the UPA government provided Modi the perfect platform to project himself as a national alternative.

Over the last few months he addressed one rally after another across India, reaching out to different sections of the population. He addressed students at Sri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi in February 2013, rural and small town crowds at Ramdev’s Patanjali Yogpeeth at Haridwar in April, and FICCI ladies the same month. He is also slated to address ex-servicemen at Rewari in Haryana on Sunday.

“I am neither an optimist who believes a glass is half full nor a pessimist who sees it as half empty. I believe it is completely filled: half with water and half with air,” he told SRCC students amid applause, projecting himself as a go-getter.

The huge support of the Bihar unit – the one that faced constant barbs from then ally JD(U) over secularism – was an additional feather in his cap.

The circle was thus complete. RSS and the BJP backed him for his popularity, which in turn seemed larger after the backing. “I am with the leader who will make me win,” a BJP leader from Bihar said as Modi was facing fire from Nitish Kumar earlier this year.

Added to this was the massive reach out to the urban middle class through smart PR work – through PR firms including global lobbying giant APCO Worldwide, which promoted the Vibrant Gujarat Investment Summit in 2013 – and impressive social media activity. Modi is the most followed Indian politician on Twitter, has a blog, and has all his speeches of the last few years uploaded on his website.

He also took care to keep the core Hindutva constituency happy, refusing a skull cap two years back, and making loaded “puppy” and “burqa of secularism” remarks earlier this year.

The fact that he combined Hindutva with claims to good governance and middle class aspiration made his popularity among BJP workers soar further. By marrying Hindutva to governance, he had made the former more respectable, they felt.

BlackBerry launches BB 9720 at Rs. 15,990

In a bid to regain the market share in India, Canadian handset-maker BlackBerry on Thursday launched a new smartphone - BlackBerry 9720 - which will retail at Rs. 15,990.

The new handset, which will be available from the weekend, builds on the success of the BlackBerry 7 OS, BlackBerry India product management head Advait Vaidya said.

From being amongst the top three smartphone players in India some time ago, BlackBerry’s market share has now tanked even below that of the Apple, a later entrant.

In terms of revenue too, BlackBerry, which was among the top three, has slipped to seventh spot in the country, as per CyberMedia Research.

In FY12, BlackBerry ranked below not just Samsung, Nokia and Micromax, but also Apple and HTC, in terms of revenue.

According to the report, BlackBerry had 3.1 per cent market share - down from over 15 per cent in the previous years - of the Rs. 31,330 crore handset markets in the country.

Fitted with the new operating system 7.1, the device features a Qwerty keyboard, 2.8-inch touch screen and track-pad for navigation, 5 megapixel camera, FM radio and new feature BBM Voice, which lets users chat over Wi-Fi for free.

Asked why BlackBerry is launching an OS7 powered device when it already has handsets powered by an advanced operating system, Mr. Vaidya said the company wants to offer devices across platforms and price points.

“We have a huge Qwerty-installed base and people want handsets across price points. This new device gives them better OS (than existing models like Curve) at affordable prices,” he said.

Earlier this year, BlackBerry had launched its BB10 operating system and unveiled two devices - Z10 and Q5.

'Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan movies inspired Chinese to intrude into India'

As security agencies probe the motive behind the infiltration of three Chinese Muslims through Sino-India border, the trio is singing a different tune.

If the responses of the three persons to the interrogators are to be believed, it was the charm of Bollywood superstars Shahrukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan that apparently drove them to India. They were detained last month.

The three – Salamo, Abdul Khaliq and Adil Thorsong – at present in the custody of security agencies at Margo post in North of Ladakh after being detained on June 12 had told their interrogators about their dreams to enter India and earn money as they were facing acute poverty in their region, official sources said.

According to the sources, there was incoherence in their statements except that they were mesmerised by the charm of Bollywood superstars – Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan.

The three claimed that they were driven out by extreme poverty from home and wanted to come to India because they had seen it as a land of prosperity on the sliver screen, the sources said.

All the three claimed during their interrogation, which was done separately, that the movies of Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan were a hit in their area – Kargalilik of Xianjang province.

The trio, who knew only two languages – Yarkandi and Uyghur – gave a different version about their family background and the way used by them to come into India.

The security agencies were still not convinced and their interrogation would continue, the sources said. The three men, aged between 18 and 23, one of whom is one-eyed, were nabbed inside Indian territory on June 12 near Sultanchku.

They were at present in the custody at Murgo post where the interrogators were flown along with a translator.

Paytm app launched for Windows Phone and Nokia Asha touch phones

Paytm, one of India's leading prepaid recharge and payment solutions for mobile, DTH, 3G data and utility services, has launched its app on Windows Phone and Nokia Asha touch platforms.

The Windows Phone app has a similar interface to its iOS counterpart. The home panel has mobile, DTH, toll card and data card recharge options. Other features available on Paytm's website and mobile apps like coupons are present in the newly launched app as well.

Paytm aims to get a bigger share of the recharge and bill payments market with the roll out of its new apps. The company claims to have over 6 million subscribers that use its services over Web, SMS, IVR, mobile Web and mobile apps.

Commenting on the launch Harinder Takhar, CEO, Paytm, said "At Paytm we have always strived to create a smooth experience for our users irrespective of their choice of device and this initiative is yet another effort to extend the world-class experience Paytm is known for to Nokia Asha and Windows Phone devices."

Joe Devassy, Regional Head, Developer Experience for India Middle East Africa, Nokia said "Mobile wallet apps have gained immense popularity amongst the smartphone and feature phone users in India. This is primarily because consumers are looking for convenient ways to buy tickets and pay their bills. We are very excited to partner with Paytm as through this partnership we are offering our Asha and Lumia consumers an ideal platform to recharge their phones and make payments while on the go. We look forward to Paytm support to provide great utility, accessibility and seamless experience to our consumers across price segments."

Cut the noise, baby is ‘God’s opinion’

Shah Rukh Khan (in picture) on Tuesday denied reports a sex determination test was done on his baby boy born through surrogacy, describing “all the noise” as “insensitive”.

“Just to put the record straight, there was no sex determination for our child. The baby was born much before the speculation of ‘sex determination’ and other ‘issues’ pertaining to the same were being raised in the media by some organisations,” Shah Rukh said, breaking his silence on the controversy over his third child.

The 47-year-old said he did not comment earlier because he and wife Gauri were dealing with the health of the child as he was “born prematurely”. The couple’s two other children include son Aryan, 15, and daughter Suhana, 13.

“Amidst all the noise that has been going around, the sweetest is the one made by our newborn baby, Abram. He was born prematurely by several months but has finally come home. Gauri and our whole family have been dealing with his health issues for a long time now,” Shah Rukh said in a statement.

He said the birth of Abram, just over six weeks old, and the days after it had been one of “emotional strife”.

“Our son is a surrogate baby and the entire process is bound by strict confidentiality. It seems unfortunate that I have to explain/clarify so many aspects for our new-born baby. They say a baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on. Post this statement, I hope we all move on too.”

AOC 15.6-inch LED TV launched for Rs 6990

A 15.6-inch AOC LED TV has been launched in the Indian market for anyone with budget constraints bothering their wallet hand. Marked at just Rs 6,990, the LE16A1333/61 carries a tag to match its size. Judging by the accompanying brochure, the manufacturer has it pegged for the sort of entertainment box people would want in their kid’s room, kitchen or largish bathroom.

AOC says that the full HD capable LE16A1333/61 consumes about 20W of power; that’s not only way lesser than a CRT set would eat, but also makes a typical ceiling fan look relatively more power hungry. The unit definitely appears bulkier than it actually is considering that the company specifies its weight at 1.2kg. And yes, it does let users watch content stored on a pen-drive, by directly plugging the gadget into the provided USB port.

The chassis is mostly black with red highlighting the right and left edges as well as bottom. The power on/off, volume controls and buttons for other key functions are positioned on the left border. The curving base on which it rests also houses a pair of inbuilt 5W speakers. Talking about speakers, the audio is supported by Dream Surround Sound and can be fine-tuned to Theater, Music, Speech or Personal modes, if the Standard one doesn’t cut it.

The TV allows for up to 95° horizontal and 65° vertical angles and flaunts a 16:9 aspect ratio. It can play 1366 x 768 resolution content and throw out visuals in Zoom1, Zoom2 or 4:3 format. The adjustable picture modes cover Vivid, Standard, Eco, Movie, Sport, Mild, Game and Personal. Also, parents need not be worried about kids tuning into the idiot box without their permission since there’s a Child Lock feature too. Another standard function we all find useful now and again is the sleep timer which can be set between 10 and 120 minutes.

The unit’s dimensions (without base) measure 390.4mm x 285.1mm x 85.2mm. Finally, the connectivity ports on the TV include those for headphones, PC, HDMI, yPbPr, AV, TV RF and USB. The last mentioned can play up to 28 video formats from a flash drive. Do all these specs make the 15.6-inch AOC TV a good buy or not? Any thoughts?

Kavita Kaushik: I made khaki uniform glamorous

The television actor says it was much before Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn made khaki popular with their cop roles in Dabangg and Singham, respectively, that she glamourised and popularised the uniform on the small screen

“For seven years, Chandramukhi Chautala made the audience laugh with her fearless nature and perfect comic timing. My character in the show made the audience realise that the police station is not a boring place,” said Kavita Kaushik. “It was way before films like Dabanng and Singham came. I was the one who made khaki uniform glamorous and sexy before Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn did,” she added.

After entertaining the viewers as aggressive and bossy Chandramukhi Chautala in F.I.R for years, she took a break from the show three months ago, but now she is making a comeback. The 32-year-old, who started her stint on F.I.R. in 2006, is excited to be back on SAB TV’s comedy drama.

After she quit F.I.R., the show took a 20-year leap and Chak De! India fame actor Chitrashi Rawat joined the cast as Chandramukhi’s daughter Jwalamukhi, also a police officer. “I am very excited to be back on the show, it’s like coming back to my family. Apart from her perfect comic timing and bindaas attitude, Chandramukhi will be seen doing more stunts, action sequences and donning more get-ups,” said Kavita.

“The show will complete 1,000 episodes very soon and I have slipped into more than 800 get-ups so far for my character. I guess this is the highest anyone has ever done on the small screen,” she added.

At the beginning of this year, Kavita took up another comedy show Tota Weds Maina. If her character in F.I.R. has been loud, Tota Weds Maina saw her playing a shy and demure girl. The actor said Maina is just the opposite of Chandramukhi, adding: “Chandramukhi is very naughty, she is an extension of Kavita. I am very naughty and sarcastic. Sarcasm is a part of me. I am very funny and I am not scared of things, so Chandramukhi was something like me,” she said.

The actor was also part of dance reality show Nach Baliye 3, in which she had participated with her ex-boyfriend Karan Grover. When asked whether she would like to participate in any reality show, Kavita said: “No, reality shows are money-making business. The participants are paid and the judges are paid. It’s all about making money, nothing else. I participated in Nach Baliye 3 because they were offering good money.”

What else do you have in your kitty? “I am doing a film called Democracy Pvt. Ltd. It is a political satire,” said the actor who has been part of shows like Kutumb, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and Kumkum.

Madhuri Dixit: I don’t think I’m a feminist!

The actor talks about being independent and strong in real and reel life

“I don’t think I’m a feminist. I am independent and strong, which is what women should be like. We are going back to the roots. We have started again. There are some wonderful directors today. Also, you can make any sort of film today. The villain of our movie (Gulaab Gang) is also a woman, which is a rare sight in Bollywood.”

IIFA 2013: Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Vidya Balan…who made a splash on the green carpet?

A galaxy of B-town stars walked the green carpet at the prestigious IIFA awards ceremony held in Macau. Who caught your attention in their stylish avatar?

As the green carpet was rolled out at the Venetian Macau for IIFA 2013, we were eagerly waiting for high and mighty B-town folks to take their starry strides forward. Soon it started raining glamour and we were left totally dazzled as the gorgeous beauties and strikingly handsome men strolled in to the glitzy gala.

Shahrukh Khan looked his debonair best in a shiny tuxedo. The moment the Chennai Express actor walked in, fans went berserk and greeted him with ear-splitting cheers. SRK charmed the audience and the photographers alike with his distinctively bearded look. Shahid Kapoor and Aftab Shivdasani were spotted posing for the shutterbugs. Both Sasha and Aftab impressed us with their suited avatars. The bow-tie helped the two to make their charm work on the ladies. Abhishek Bachchan decided to go all jhataak and over-the-top in his flashy green kurta, which came as a bit of a style jhatka, considering we had seen him in a candy pink jacket just before that. After getting not so pleasant reactions from onlookers, junior B quickly decided to go in for an outfit change, seeming more haute and happening in a more conventional tuxedo. Sushant Singh Rajput, Anupam Kher and Zayed Khan decided to keep the affair straight and suited. Vicky Donor actor Ayushmann Khurrana made a statement with his designer bandhgala and blue pajamas. Neil Nitin Mukesh almost blinded us with his give-me-red look.

If the men managed to turn on their charm on the green carpet, the stylish divas made sure that they added bling to elevate the fashion parade to its next level. Madhuri Dixit Nene looked gorgeous in a pink chiffon ensemble with floral motifs. Vidya Balan won our vote for a beautiful black ghagra-odhni with intricate gold work. Anushka Sharma look absolutely heavenly in her long white beaded-backed Cavalli gown. Jacqueline Fernandez and Amrita Rao added much needed drama with their finely crafted costumes. Clearly, pale was the shade of the season as Sridevi, Dia Mirza and Neha Dhupia chose pastels to shine in. Yami Gautam looked thanda with a not so exciting combination of colours, but showed off her elegant collarbones. Minissha Lamba, Huma Qureshi, Gauhar Khan and Parineeti Chopra numbed our style senses with their not so appropriate fashion intelligence.

Take a look at this colourful fashion parade and tell us who inspired you with their unique styles and who put you off with their green carpet disasters!

Complaint against Salman Khan for posting information on 2002 hit-and-run case on website

social activist has filed a complaint in a local court seeking action against Bollywood actor Salman Khan for launching a website with information on the 2002 hit-and-run case involving him, alleging that it was contempt of court.

According to the complaint, the website, www.salmankhanfiles.com, was launched by the actor recently.

A Mumbai sessions court ruled last month that the actor must be tried for culpable homicide not amounting for murder in the case -- a serious charge under IPC which attracts 10 years' punishment in jail.

"When the case is underway and matter sub-judice, how can he use Internet to spread information about the proceedings?" activist Hemant Patil asked in his complaint filed yesterday, according to his lawyer Wajid Khan.

Patil claimed said that the Bandra police station refused to register a complaint against Salman in this regard and hence he decided to move the magistrate's court.

The complaint alleged that Salman is using a website to spread information about the court proceedings and inviting comments from the general public when his hit-and-run case and other cases are still subjudice.

This is also a violation of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, the complaint alleged.

The magistrate has accepted Patil's complaint and scheduled it for hearing on August 5.

Patil has contended that this attempt of actor may prejudice the mind of court which has yet not delivered its final verdict in the case.

The dates of the posts on the website indicate that the website was being updated from May 2, 2013.

The website primarily displays the bare written orders issued by the Bandra Metropolitan court as well as the June 24 order of sessions judge UB Hejib, which ordered that Salman should be retried for the graver charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

The June 24 order was a major setback to the actor, who was earlier tried by Bandra metropolitan magistrate court for a lesser charge of rash and negligent act causing death, under section 304 A of IPC. The charge is punishable with two years' imprisonment.

From July 19 onwards, Salman would be tried under section 304 (ii) of the IPC, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail.

Patil has pointed out the case of Anuja Parbu Desai v/s State of Goa in which court had made certain observations to maintain the dignity of the court. This act of the actor is also an attempt to interfere in the judicial system of the country, he argued.

On September 28, 2002, the actor had allegedly rammed his car into a bakery shop in suburban Bandra killing one person and injuring four others.

Megan Fox, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez give sex advice

Megan Fox says great sex happens with someone you love. I’ve only been with two men my entire life: my childhood sweetheart and Brian (Austin Green). I can never have sex with someone I don’t love, ever. The idea makes me sick.

Cameron Diaz tells you not to fake it in the bedroom. You have to really enjoy (being sexy). Not fake anything. Sexy is being in the moment, whether that means being coy or coming on hard. Faking is always lame and it never comes across the way you want it to.
Jennifer Lopez go easy on her. Women don’t like their nipples twiddled like radio tuners. The guy thinks, ‘Oh, she’s loving it,’ but she’s thinking, ‘God, please stop!

LG launches Galaxy Note II rival Optimus G Pro at Rs 42,500

NEW DELHI: LG has launched its Optimus G Pro flagship smartphone in India. The device has a 5.5-inch IPS display that supports full HD videos (1920x1080p) and rivals Samsung Galaxy Note II smartphone. The company has priced the new Optimus G Pro at Rs 42,500 in the country.

The new Optimius G Pro is powered by a 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor, and runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). Powered by a 3,140mAh battery, the phone has 2GB RAM and 32GB in-built memory, along with microSD card support. LG has included a 13MP camera with LED flash on the back, while the front panel has a camera with 2.1MP resolution. The phone's camera has dual recording feature, wherein the device can capture video using both front and rear cameras at the same time.

The phone also has an infrared sensor that enables users to control functions in electronic devices like TVs, set-top boxes, air conditioners etc. The device comes with the QuadBeat earphones that also came with the Optimus G smartphone. While wireless charging is missing from the Optimus G Pro, users can opt for the Quick Cover, a flip cover that comes with the wireless charging plate. This flip cover, priced at Rs 2,499, has a feature that allows the screen to turn off when the cover is placed on it.

Soon Kwon, managing director, LG India said, "The market size for 5-inch and above screens is expected to be 1.5 million units by end of 2013. Based on this insight, with Optimus G Pro we have pushed the boundaries of computing and technological innovation to develop a smartphone that caters to both business and lifestyle needs of today's customers. We are confident that the smartphone will find a large following as it sets a new benchmark with a perfect screen size of 5.5 -inch display that provides an ultimate consumer experience."

LG said it aims to capture 10% share of the Indian smartphone market by 2014. The company said it has earmarked a budget of Rs 80 crore to improve retail development and marketing in the country.

In the past few months, LG has rolled out its latest smartphones -- Optimus L7 II Dual, Optimus L5 II Dual and L3 II Dual -- in the country soon after their global launch. In February, the company launched Optimus G, its erstwhile flagship and a rival to Samsung Galaxy S III, at Rs 30,900.

Kwon also mentioned that the company aims to widen its portfolio over the next year, including smartphones and tablets. Interestingly, LG does not have any tablets in the market right now. The company's Europe vice president had previously revealed its plans to develop Android tablets by the end of this year. When questioned about the tablets, LG India marketing head was evasive about the launch date as well as screen size of the upcoming devices.

Nokia Asha phones getting WhatsApp, Mail for Exchange support with new update

Nokia is rolling out a new software update for its Asha touchscreen phones bringing new functionality and improvements.

The software update, available for Nokia Asha 305, Nokia Asha 306, dual-SIM variants of Nokia Asha 308 and Nokia Asha 310, adds several new features including enhanced support for Mail for Exchange. It also adds support for popular mobile instant messenger WhatsApp, and improved social apps, in addition to a new dedicated launcher for YouTube.

The update can be downloaded over the air through the Device updates menu in the Phone settings or by connecting the phone to a computer via the Nokia Suite desktop software.
Nokia had announced last week that the Mail for Exchange app was now available on Nokia Store for Nokia Asha users.

The app, which was initially announced in May, is compatible with the Nokia Asha 311, Nokia Asha 310, Nokia Asha 309 and Nokia Asha 308, will allow users to sync their email, calendar and contacts data with Microsoft Exchange 2003, 2007, 2010 Servers and Microsoft Office 365 Mobility Online Service through Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync protocol. Perhaps the update facilitates the installation of the app in the above mentioned Asha series phones.

With support for WhatsApp, Nokia wants to make its Asha phones a strong contender in the low-cost phones segment, with budget Android smartphones eating into its share. While one can install and use messaging apps much more easily on Android smartphones which come with a dedicated app store,Google Play Store, and support for running apps in the background, not all Nokia Asha feature phones support it out of the box due to their software limitations. It's worth mentioning that a large number of users are increasingly using data based messaging apps over conventional text messaging so if Nokia doesn't add these 'smart' features it's likely that it will see its users abandoning the platform.

This also consolidates Nokia's efforts to position the Asha series as a smart feature phone or indeed a smartphone.

Meanwhile, Nokia had also introduced two more apps that will encourage corporate users to adopt Nokia Asha phones in addition to offering Mail for Exchange support. Editori Text and Editori sheet apps allow users to view and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents on the move. With the apps users can now modify, save and share documents or spreadsheets for quick review right from their Nokia Asha phones.

TV at Rs 27 lakh: Cos look to develop ultra HD segment in India

New Delhi: A television priced at Rs 27 lakh? Yes. Manufacturers like Sony, Samsung and LG believe India is ready to be developed as a market for high-end ultra high definition (UHD) sets with demand for bigger screen sizes expected to grow.

Recently these companies have introduced their range of UHD televisions which are priced between Rs 17 lakh and Rs 27 lakh with screen sizes of 84 inches and 85 inches, hoping that they would be able to create a niche segment and get more margins from these high-end products.

"Now, customer demands for even bigger screen sizes, upwards of 55 inch. For these kinds of large screen sizes, HD is actually not good enough to experience the best picture quality," Sony India General Manager, Marketing Tadato Kimura said.

Therefore, it was inevitable to create a better technology to cater to this kind of demand and to complete the large screen experience (with UHD technology), he added.

The manufacturers are clear that they will be catering to a select set of customers with the UHD products, which have been also launched worldwide only recently.

"Ultra HD TVs are a niche segment....In our opinion, the customer of ultra HD TVs is a pioneer who understands the technology, and seeks the unique experience the product delivers," LG India Marketing Head-Home Entertainment Rishi Tandon said.

Expressing similar sentiments, Samsung India Senior VP-Consumer Electronics Atul Jain said: "It is a new technology which is being introduced in the Indian and the global markets. So in many ways, we are creating the market in India at this moment."

The UHD TVs have better pixel resolution quality, four times than normal HD TVs, with richer and more saturated colors in much bigger screen size, although they are priced at a premium.

At present the biggest screen size that Sony and LG sell in normal HD TVs is 65 inch 3D TVs in the price range of Rs 3.60 lakh to Rs 3.75 lakh. Samsung offers up to 75 inch HD TV for Rs 7.50 lakh.

Apart from catering to a niche segment, the companies are also looking at better margins from these UHD TVs as compared to mass segment products.

"The 4K technology TVs will give us value and better margins while smaller screen will drive volumes for the company," Sony India MD Kenichiro Hibi had said.

For LG, it is yet another step in widening its range of products in the market.

"We are looking to strengthen our product offering by introducing the Ultra HD displays in different screen sizes," Tandon added.

Having introduced the expensive products at a time when the market is down, these companies are also gearing up to spend on advertisements to spread awareness.

"We are currently working on a new Bravia 4K television commercial, which is expected to go on-air from third week of July. Apart from TV, we will also have print and online campaign," said Kimura.

Sony has earmarked Rs 250 crore to promote its Bravia range of TVs, including the 4K series.

Meanwhile, LG will also have a 360 degree campaign to promote its upcoming products. Similarly, Samsung has also planned to target the class with premium marketing activities for promoting Ultra HD sets.

When asked how confident they are selling these ultra expensive televisions, LG said it is targeting to sell 1,000 units in the coming festival period, while Sony and Samsung did not share an exact number saying they have just started exploring the market.
